The title refers to spiritual traditions in which previously inaccessible states of mind and being are reached through rituals and activities intended to circumvent ordinary states of mind and being. Once achieved, these new states of mind/being forever alter ordinary mind/being. They are the internal places where previously inconceivable things become available.
Inconceivable Things is scored for three or more pianists, each playing the same music, at times synchronized and at times drifting out of synchronization. For this recording, I performed as three separate pianists through the use of recording studio magic.
The work was written at the request of Fred Speck for the University of Louisville New Music Ensemble, which premiered it on April 13, 2006, performed by University of Louisville students Ryan Connell, Christian Gentry, and Jeremy Podgursky.
